ReThink Waste is proud to support The Great Unwaste – an inspiring new initiative already making a difference in tackling household food waste across Australia.
29 September 2025 marks the very first Great Unwaste Day – Australia’s newest national day to celebrate the food we already have by turning it into dishes worth sharing. It coincides with the UN’s International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, making it the perfect moment to shine a spotlight on household food waste with a distinctly Australian flavour.
This year’s theme – “Join the Leftovers Revolution” – is about having fun, getting creative with what’s already in your fridge or pantry, and showing that small actions shared by many add up to real change.
If every Australian household took part in The Great Unwaste Day and avoided wasting edible food for just 24 hours, the collective impact would be extraordinary:
Whether you’re an individual, community group, school or business, there are plenty of ways to participate:
You can also explore new recipes, other food-saving resources, and even take a fun food-waste personality quiz on the campaign’s website.
Let’s create a culture Australians can be proud of – one where edible food is celebrated, not scraped into the bin. Together, we can turn 29 September into a new national tradition.
