Divert Landfill; Declutter. Discover. The Garage Sale Trail is back!

News and Events / News

Looking for a fun way to declutter, save money, and help the planet at the same time? The Garage Sale Trail is back in 2025 – bigger and better than ever – giving Tasmanians the chance to give items a second life and keep them out of landfill. Whether you’re a thrifty shopper on the hunt for treasures or a seller ready to pass on pre-loved goods, there’s a spot for you on the Trail.

Why it matters

Australians send millions of tonnes of waste to landfill every year. When perfectly good items end up there, it’s not just space that’s wasted – it’s the materials, energy, and resources that went into making them. By buying secondhand and rehoming unwanted goods, we keep valuable materials in circulation, cut greenhouse gas emissions and support a culture of reuse.

Last year in Tasmania alone, the Garage Sale Trail made a real impact:

  • 13,310 Tasmanians participated as sellers or shoppers
  • 446 garage sales & thrift markets ran across two weekends
  • 43,293 pre-loved items were sold or reused – that’s tens of thousands of items kept out of landfill
  • $227,093 was generated for local communities, charities, and good causes
  • $543,330 was saved by shoppers buying secondhand instead of new

How to get involved

Taking part is easy – and every sale or purchase helps reduce waste:

  • Host a sale: Register your garage sale, community market or fundraiser on the Garage Sale Trail website. You’ll be added to the national map and receive free promotional tools to attract shoppers.
  • Shop the trail: Explore the interactive map to find garage sales and markets near you. Every secondhand item you buy is one less destined for landfill.
  • Join with friends or community groups: Combine your efforts with neighbours, schools, clubs or charities to create a bigger event and raise more funds.

When and where

The Garage Sale Trail runs over two big weekends in November 2025 with events popping up across Tasmania. Listings go live in early spring, so keep an eye on the map to plan your treasure hunt or start decluttering now.
