Why You Shouldn’t Put Hazardous Waste in the Kerbside Bin or Dump It
It might seem easier to chuck old chemicals or cleaning solutions in with your regular rubbish or dump them in isolated spots—but doing so carries serious risks:
| Risk | What Happens |
| Water contamination | When liquids like pesticides, solvents or paint thinner leach into soil, they can reach waterways. That threatens aquatic life and can end up in drinking water sources. |
| Soil pollution | Toxic heavy metals or chemical residues can stay in soils for decades, harming plants, microorganisms and wildlife. |
| Air pollution | Burning or improper disposal can release fumes or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which damage air quality and your health. |
| Harm to waste workers & infrastructure | Items labelled “hazardous” can corrode equipment, cause dangerous reactions, or injure workers who are not expecting them. |
| Spread of pest & safety risks | Old chemicals can degrade; containers can leak or burst. Dumped waste attracts curious children or wildlife which can ingest or come in contact with chemicals. |
