ReThink Waste Tasmania: Embracing the Recycle Rewards Container Refund Scheme

News and Events / News

On May 1, 2025, Tasmania launched its long-awaited Recycle Rewards program, a container refund scheme offering a 10-cent refund for every eligible drink container returned. This initiative aims to reduce litter, promote recycling, and support local communities across the state.

Why Recycle Rewards Matters

Drink containers accounted for approximately 45% of Tasmania’s litter by volume . By incentivizing the return of these containers, the scheme seeks to:

  • Reduce litter: cleaner streets, parks, and waterways.
  • Boost recycling rates: Turning containers into new products.
  • Support communities: Over 110 local organizations benefit through fundraising.
  • Create jobs: New employment opportunities, including at facilities like the Goodwood drive-through depot.

How to Participate

Participating in Recycle Rewards is simple:

  • Collect eligible containers: Look for the 10ยข mark near the barcode.
  • Return them to a refund point: Find your nearest location at recyclerewards.com.au.
  • Choose your reward: Opt for cash, bank transfer, or donate your refund to a registered charity.

With 49 refund points across Tasmania, including King and Flinders Islands, most residents are within 10 km of a collection point.

Community Impact

The scheme has already made a significant impact:

Over 12 million containers returned since launch, with half from the southern region .

Support for local charities: Community groups can register as donation partners to receive refunds.

New employment opportunities: Facilities like the Goodwood depot provide paid work and training for Tasmanians with disabilities.
